Add non-steam games to Win7 taskbar

To add a non-steam game so it works with steam and creating a shortcut on your Windows 7 taskbar, follow these instructions. After installing the non-steam game, add it to steam using Steam; Library ->Games -> Add non Steam Game to my Library Then create a short cut by locating the game in the library, right click on it and create desktop shortcut. This short cut is no good for adding to the taskbar but gives vital information for the next step. Locate the shortcut and copy the number after /rungameid/. Only the number is needed. Next, create a copy of the steam shortcut and bring up the properties. Add "-gameidlaunch xxxxxx" where xxxxx is the number from the previous action. eg: the Target should look something like this; "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -gameidlaunch 14179558322725715968 After saving (clicking ok) the shortcut should be able to be moved to the taskbar and launch the game correctly. There are some exceptions to this ...

4th April 2012 - Web based Virus Infection

Last night I was attacked by a virus. All I was doing was browsing the web on programming sites and stumbled across a site which must have been a hack site. I was running IE9 and before I could react, an ActiveX app ran and the computer went haywire. Background went black, all my desktop icons disappeared. The task bar changed and all these alerts popped up stating I had a corrupted hard drive and here is a program that will fix it. The thing that saved me as it was trying to run a program that needed Admin rights and I thought running c:/users/xxx/temp/UAC.EXE didn't seem right. Lucky I had Microsoft Security Essentials running which picked up that my computer was infected by Win32/FakeSysdef. From http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?name=Trojan%3aWin32%2fFakeSysdef&threatid=2147639286 Win32/FakeSysdef is a family of programs that claim to scan for hardware defects related to system memory, hard drives and over-all system performance. ...

How to check what App is listening on your network

Image
I had a virus scare the other day. Google was blocking me and calling me a spammer. Ultimately, what happened was my modem picked up a bad IP from the dynamic pool which was causing me grief. After 3 hours of investigating, all I needed to do was reset my modem to pick up a new IP. It took me ages to find a tool to see if any applications I was running were communicating over the internet which I was not aware of. Eventually I found CurrPorts which I found fantastic. I was easily able to see what was connecting to external devices. It picked up that an app was doing upgrade checks which I was unaware of. This was fine and acceptable but proved the tool works. Tool is available here; http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

Login background customization

Image
I'm in a customization frame of mind at the moment and felt the login screen on my MSWindows7 workstation was rather boring. I followed the stesp here and it worked perfectly. http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-change-windows-7-logon-screen-easily-without-using-hacks-tools/ I've listed the work instructions here as the page is a bit wordy for my liking; 1. Edit the registry setting to enable backgrounds (original blog has a file you can run to do this);[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background] "OEMBackground"=dword:00000001 2. Create the following directory structure. New new directories should be added (Info and Backgrounds); C:\Windows\System32\oobe\ Info\Backgrounds 3. Copy your background into Backgrounds directory and rename it "backgroundDefault.jpg" 4. lock your screen and you should see the new image (no need to reboot). While I'm at it, I decided to change the boot screen als...

Found a few more MS-Desktop tweaks

Here is a good site which lists a number of Desktop tweaks for MSWindows 7. http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/25-cool-windows-7-interface-tweaks-907154 The main applications which I found interesting are; - Start button Orb changer which changes the image of the ORB http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-7-start-button-changer-released On another note, I was looking for an ISO mounter and have used Daemon tools up to this point but I've read that the latest version includs spyware and was recommended to try "Virtual Clone Drive". http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html

Microsoft Project View

I found this which is a free tool to view Microsoft Project files. Most of the ones I initially found all cost money and if I was going to pay, I'd just buy Microsoft Project. http://freecode.com/projects/ms-project-viewer
